Dépaysement - Vilda Siurblyte at KSM-lab

Dépaysement is a French word for the feeling that comes from not being in one’s home country. It is the unsteady feeling you get when you are away from your home; a sense of disorientation due to experience of unfamiliar surroundings.

Dépaysement is a change of scenery — a person in an unusual setting, an unknown environment or in an unexpected situation. Appropriated from anthropology. Dépaysement is defined as the experience of (re)seeing familiar object in different way.

Vilda Siurblyte has been working on a photographic project for the last six months and Dépaysement is the outcome of this process. She shows less than a dozen photographs from Östergötland where she has used analogue camera, scanned the images and often added text to the black and white imagery.

The texts were added to enrich the understanding, context and the interpretation of the image itself. In all works the intention of the texts mix with the images and produce thoughts and feelings not generated by either of the two alone. Two very different forms of art: text and image create “spaces” that can only be filled by personal imagination. It’s like a secret about a secret. The more you see, the less you know.

Vilda Siurblyte is a Media Production and Communication student from Lithuania based in Sweden for one year. The project is the outcome of her passionate love for photography. She says, “as long as I can remember, I was always captivated by the idea of photography and the possibility to freeze the moment in a particular time and place.”
